There are essentially four types of portable Humidifiers

  • Vaporizer Humidifiers contain a heating element that boils or gently heats water. They put moisture into the air by sending out a stream of hot mist.
  • Ultrasonic Humidifiers employ technology that uses high-frequency vibrations to generate micro-fine mist. Cool Mist and Dual Warm & Cool Mist models as well as digitally controlled units are available.
  • Cool-mist Humidifiers work without heating the water. A motor forces the water droplets into a mist which is then dispersed into the air.
  • Evaporative Humidifiers
The most common type of humidifier is called an evaporative humidifier. This type of humidifier is really quite simple and, generally, is self-regulating. A reservoir or tank holds cold water. Normally s combined wick/filter absorbs the water from the tank. A fan then blows air through the moistened filter. Sometime a small pump is used to pump the water through the wick. As the air passes through the filter, it evaporates some of the water there.

In the case of the very popular Boneco 2055D with digital display and control & the Boneco 2255, there are a number of rotating discs that lift water from the tank rather than use a material filter. The benefits are the discs are easier to clean and therefore no replacement parts are required. With an evaporative humidifier, the higher the relative humidity, the harder it is for the water to evaporate from the filter, which is why an evaporative humidifier is self-regulating as humidity increases, the humidifier's water-vapour output naturally decreases.
